Night Shift Brewing Receives Federal License Approval

If you’ve ever met me, you’ve probably heard me rave about Night Shift Brewing, one of the new start-up breweries based here in the Boston area. Nearly a year ago, they invited Tim and I to check out the beers that they had been homebrewing in their Somerville house (actually, they basically converted the whole house into a brewery), with the intention of becoming a commercial brewery within a year. Long story short, sampling one or two beers turned into a 14 beer, many-hour-long expedition, during which the phrase “this may be one of the best beers I’ve ever had” left my mouth somewhere between 10 and 14 times. Needless to say, I loved their beers, and the guys behind the beer are pretty cool characters themselves who put up with me for a good 6 hours.

Now, not-quite-one-year later, they’re still on track. They just received their Federal License Approval, which is a huge step forward. They’re now just waiting on their Farmer-Brewer License, which should be approved in the next month or two, assuming Massachusetts doesn’t decide to pull a Farmer-Brewer Legislation switcharoo like they did on Idle Hands in August (Don’t worry, the changes didn’t stick & Idle Hands will be on shelves soon).

Assuming production starts in January, we could see their beer on shelves by as early as February! That happens to be exactly one year since I was lucky enough to taste all of their beers and give my input on which ones they should launch with. Coincidence? Nay, providence.

It looks to me like these guys really know what they’re doing, and have it together enough to be meeting their proposed timelines, which is pretty rare  in the beer business. I’d say its even time to start getting excited about trying one of their beers as soon as February!

Have any of you out there in the intertubes been lucky enough to try one of their beers? How about some of the other great new start-up breweries?

I have to echo Rich’s excitement on this one… usually I *hate* February, but I have a feeling this year it’ll be pretty epic!
